The Portage Lake District Library
The Portage Lake District Library, on Montezuma Avenue and Huron Street in Houghton, offers many materials and services of potential benefit to our client population of international persons. These materials and services are offered free of charge, of special significance for our international friends, many of whom are living on modest stipends as research or teaching assistants.

Many of our tutees have children of pre-school and primary-school age. For them, the library
offers childrenís books suitable for various age groups, including advice on suitability for
a given age group. The library also offers computer-use programs for children, educational games,
summer reading programs, and story-hour programs for children aged three through five. |
| The library has a collection of video cassettes that can be checked out for a week. Its
extensive collection of books on tape could allow ESL learners to read and then hear a book.
The library also has some Chinese language materials. |
 |
From the libraryís brochure: ìAlthough everyone is welcome to use the libraryís materials, only
residents Ö in the city of Houghton, Chassell, Portage, or Stanton Townships may borrow materials
Ö without a fee.î
