Volunteer tutors are asked to meet regularly with students, to determine their level of proficiency, and to select materials appropriate to their needs. A collection of materials for use in the program is housed in the Portage Lake District Library in Houghton, see Available hard-copy teaching materials below.
Tutors receive a brief introduction and training at the beginning of their tutoring and a semiannual newsletter with information about new materials available. In addition, information about internet-available resources and locally generated downloadable materials can be found elsewhere on this site.
Consider being a tutor! You need not be a professional teacher of English. All that is needed is an interest in helping people, individually or in small groups. You will learn about their lives, cultures, and hopes for the future. You will have the opportunity to be a mentor and friend. Those of us in the program have derived great satisfaction from our role as tutors and mentors.
